Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an American action comedy television series that airs on Fox. Set in the (fictional) 99th Precinct of the New York City Police Department in Brooklyn, the single-camera series follows an immature detective (Andy Samberg) and his relationship with his strict new captain (Andre Braugher).
It premiered on September 17, 2013 as part of the 2013–14 American television season. The series' premiere garnered 6.17 million viewers.[1]

Cast[edit]

  • Andy Samberg as Detective Jake Peralta, a talented but childish detective. It is revealed that his father abandoned him and his mother when he was very young.[2]
  • Andre Braugher as Captain Ray Holt, the 99th Precinct's strict new Commanding Officer. The Nine-Nine is Holt's first command despite many years of outstanding service, something he attributes to prejudice against him being gay.[2] He has a husband, whose name is Kevin.
  • Stephanie Beatriz as Detective Rosa Diaz, a smart, tough, and mysterious detective. She attended parochial school and later studied ballet, and went to the police academy with Jake.[2]
  • Terry Crews as Detective Sergeant Terry Jeffords, the detective squad's leader. He previously worked with Holt at another precinct where he was overweight and was given the nickname "Terry Titties". A year prior to the show's beginning, following the birth of twin baby girls named Cagney and Lacey, a reference to the classic police procedural show Cagney & Lacey, he suffered a breakdown of sorts where he "lost his edge" and any desire to work in the field due to a fear of losing his life and leaving his children without a father.[2]
  • Melissa Fumero as Detective Amy Santiago, Jake's uptight and overachievingCuban-American partner.[2] She is continually trying to ingratiate herself with Captain Holt. She has a competitive nature stemming from having seven brothers.
  • Joe Lo Truglio as Detective Charles Boyle, a nervous, clumsy but honest and hard-working detective who has a crush on Detective Diaz.[2] He is divorced from his wife, who had numerous affairs during their marriage. He is also a huge foodie.
  • Chelsea Peretti as Administrator Gina Linetti, the 99th Precinct's sardonic civilian administrator.[2] She belongs to a dance troupe called "Floorgasm."

Recurring[edit]

  • Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller as Detectives Michael Hitchcock and Norm Scully. Sgt. Jeffords describes them as "pretty much useless, but they make good coffee." Scully is middle-aged, lazy and overweight, while the elderly Hitchcock usually seems to have no idea what's going on, even if he doesn't let that dampen his enthusiasm.

Guest stars[edit]

  • Mlepnos (Fred Armisen), a creepy tenant in the building in which a murder took place who spells his name with a 'silent clay' in the middle. While on door duty, the detectives run into Mlepnos, asking him if he's ever heard of the victim, showing him a photograph. He steals the photograph and closes the door.
  • Doorman (Andy Richter), a rude doorman who refuses to assist Jake during a routine questioning.
  • Detective Warren Pembroke (Dean Winters), a detective for the Major Crimes Unit notorious for taking over cases that are mostly solved and getting all of the credit for solving them, earning him the nickname "the Vulture".
  • Jimmy Brogan (Stacy Keach), a crime writer from the 1970s whom Jake greatly admires. Brogan is revealed to be homophobic and quite manipulating, leading to Jake punching him, and having previous recorded demeaning quotes about Holt, he, in turn, focuses his vitriol toward Jake.
  • Fire Marshal Boone (Patton Oswalt), the dimwitted fire marshal of the local fire station precinct. He hates the detectives of 99 intensely. He reveals that his father abandoned him when he was a child.
  • Dustin Whitman (Kid Cudi), A "perp" Jake arrested. Calls Jake, "Joke" Peralta.
  • Doug Judy (Craig Robinson) 'The Pontiac Bandit' who escapes from Peralta and Diaz by pretending to have information on who Peralta believed was the actual 'Pontiac bandit'.

Production[edit]

On May 8, 2013, Fox placed a thirteen-episode order for the single-camera ensemble comedy.[3][4][5] On October 18, 2013, the series was picked up for a full season, and will air after Super Bowl XLVIII along with New Girl.[6]
