Charles "Charlie" Robinson (born November 9, 1945) is an American theater, television and film actor. He is best known for his role on the NBC sitcom Night Court as Macintosh "Mac" Robinson (Seasons 2–9), the clerk of the court and a Vietnam War veteran. Although his most frequent on-screen billing has been Charlie Robinson, Night Court had credited him as "Charles Robinson" throughout his 1984–92 stint as Mac.

In two of his earliest film appearances, 1974's Sugar Hill and 1975's The Black Gestapo, he was credited as Charles P. Robinson. Some of his credits have been occasionally commingled with those of Charles Knox Robinson who, between 1958 and 1971, made numerous television and film appearances under the name Charles Robinson.

Early career

A native of Houston, Robinson has been performing since the 1960s, is a member of the Actors Studio, and is considered by playwright Lyle Kessler to be "one of the great American Actors." In his early career, he was a singer; as a teenager with the group Archie Bell and the Drells, and later with a group called Southern Clouds of Joy. In the late 1960s, Charlie attended, and was enrolled in, Studio 7, an acting school operated by Chris Wilson at the Houston Music Theatre. He stayed with Chris when the school was moved to another location in Southwest Houston where mainly children's theatre was presented. Charlie was cast in a made for TV production and soon moved to the Hollywood area where his career took off.

Later career

Robinson's acting credits include appearances in Black Gestapo, The White Shadow, Flamingo Road, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The Game, Touched by an Angel, and Antwone Fisher. Robinson was cast in the role on Newdell in the NBC comedy Buffalo Bill. Not the show it was expected to be, Buffalo Bill was canceled after one season and replaced by Night Court. Robinson was cast as court clerk Mac Robinson, after the first season in 1984, when Karen Austin, who played the original court clerk, left the cast. Robinson played the role on Night Court from 1984 until the show ended in 1992.

He also directed three episodes of the series. From 1992 to 1995, Robinson co-starred on the sitcom Love & War, replacing John Hancock who died a few episodes into the series run. Robinson played character Bud Harper in Home Improvement, and has appeared in many other television shows including House, The Bernie Mac Show, My Wife and Kids, Soul Food, Charmed, Hart of Dixie, How I Met Your Mother and My Name Is Earl.

He has done commercial work for NEXTEL. He was asking a worker if he's "agitating my dots" after he walks in on two other dispatchers staring at the dots, which represented delivery workers, on a computer screen.

2000–2016

In 2010, Robinson worked at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and co-starred in the film Jackson which was directed by J.F. Lawton. Robinson appeared as "Troy" in August Wilson's Fences in Southern California's South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa from January 22, 2010 until February 21, 2010. In September 2013, he returned to the theater to portray Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman.

He appeared in an Aspen Dental commercial in 2015 as the customer who coined the phrase, "I am not doin' that." This is in response to the receptionist telling him that he would have to drink his meals through a straw until his dentures were ready.

Awards and nominations

Robinson received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series.

Hey it's Mac as an inkeeper instead of a court clerk from Night Court.  I will watch the show just for him......I mean I've been watching the show because of him.  There's a lot of great television shows on these days.  There's a lot of junk too.  I have to sell bus transfers 3 days out of the week and sell blood and other stuff.....oh wait.... They don't pay for that in Canada.  Watch the show.  Read the basics below.

Episodes

The intended fifth episode of the series was originally intended to air on August 24, 2017, but was held back as it "contained elements that were deemed too sensitive" at that point in time. At the end of August 2017, Garcia noted on Twitter that the held episode would not be made available "for awhile", and that he hopes that it will be released at a later date. In mid-September, Garcia again posted on Twitter and confirmed that the episode would air the next Thursday as the eighth episode of the season, albeit in an edited form to fit its new place in the show's continuity.

When the episode aired, the sensitive elements were revealed to be in relation to the Unite the Right rally which took place two weeks before the episode was originally due to air. The episode depicted an Alzheimer's patient regaining his spousal abuse tendencies and racist personality - going as far as sewing and wearing a KKK outfit with the intention of attending a rally, while also revealing he once murdered an African American while burning down a local black church.

Plot

The series is about a ten-or twelve-year-old-boy who claims a gift from an intergalactic reality-altering robot named U.D. to manifest one of three choices throughout his day, leading to adventures.

This is called "Decider Mode" and time appears to freeze for everyone but U.D. and "The Decider" (normally Chuck). Although they seem random, U.D. reveals the ability to influence the selection in "Flush Hour Two" when he generates three identical options to seek help from a pirate monkey to rescue Ariana, the goldfish he befriended that belongs to Chuck's best friend Misha.

Characters

Main characters

Chuck McFarlane (voiced by Sabrina Pitre) is the eponymous hero of the series.

UD (short for U-Decide 3000, voiced by Ryan Beil) is the choice-enabling alien robot who bends reality to suit Chuck's whims.

Misha (voiced by Kira Tozer) is Chuck's best friend, and the heroine of the series. Chuck frequently nicknames her "Mish", dropping the "a" from the end and halving the syllable count. Closed captions frequently spell her name as Meesha or Meesh. She has hair tied into a ponytail which is purple and pink. She is 12.
Recurring characters

Ellen (voiced by Rebecca Shoichet) is Chuck and Norm's mom. She is a caterer.

Norm McFarlane is Chuck's older brother.

Ash (as she calls herself, or Ashley, as Norm calls her; voiced by Rebecca Shoichet) is a student. She is a girl with glasses and purple twintails who Norm is romantically interested in. She loses her retainer and is called "milady". She has a "nerdy laugh" according to captions and finds varying things interesting about Norm, such as his being a former villain (after losing ice powers in "Cool Hand Norm") or him being comfortable with his body (farting after he does).

Misha's mom and dad are strict about her getting good grades.

Joey Adonis (voiced by Vincent Tong) is a fat rich boy who antagonizes Chuck.

Biff Adonis is Joey's movie star dad who Chuck admires.

Alfie is Joey's butler who bathes him. He considers Chuck practically a bestie.

Pepper is a girl with orange hair and glasses. Misha chooses her for a lab partner in "Smarten Up Chuck" and in another episode she has the same hairstyle as Misha on picture day. In "Ultimate Chuck" she and Joey are picking volleyball teams and fight over Chuck until he hugs them, joining both.

"some random teenager" as Chuck refers to her in "Cool Hand Norm", is a blonde girl with hair covering one of her eyes. She is among a group who flees Norm's flirtations and asks with disapproval if Chuck knows him. At the end of "Abraham Stinking" she is depicted on a date with Norm and likes his skunk breath.

Ms. Cho is Chuck's teacher.

Dr. Crown is a dreaded dentist.

Coach Dwayne is the balding gym teacher with a mustache and glasses.

Chilly Parchuway

Production[edit]
Principal photography began on the first season of Seed in October 2012 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.[3]
Although the show's premise closely resembles the 2011 Canadian film Starbuck, producer Joseph Raso has clarified in interviews that he already had the idea in development before Starbuck was released.[4]
Reception[edit]
The Globe and Mail called the series "deeply silly, and the kind of good, off-kilter comedy that we can do with aplomb in Canada... There’s no recipe, but among the requirements are characters who are fabulously immature, plus some sharp, unostentatious writing and a version of stoner humour that works even if you’re not five miles high." [5]
In 2013, the series was picked up for U.S. broadcast by The CW.[6] However, on July 23, 2014, the network pulled the show from its schedule after two airings due to low ratings.[7]
