Hope & Faith is an American sitcom that aired for three seasons on ABC
from September 26, 2003 to May 2, 2006. For its first two seasons the show was
part of a revived TGIF comedy block.
The show starred Faith Ford as Hope Shanowski and Kelly Ripa as Faith. Ford
plays a homemaker with a husband (played by Ted McGinley) and three children.
Ripa plays her sister, a soap opera star whose character is killed off, leading
her to move in with her sister's family. The show is based in part on the life
of its creator, Joanna Johnson, a former cast member of The Bold and the
Beautiful. The show featured guest stars such as Tony Curtis, Dean Cain, Robert
Wagner, Regis Philbin (Ripa's co-host on Live with Regis and Kelly), Kathie Lee
Gifford, Jenny McCarthy and Mark Consuelos (Ripa's husband).
The show was primarily filmed at New York City's Silvercup East, a sister
studio to Silvercup Studios, to accommodate Ripa's schedule with Live with Regis
and Kelly.
Hope and Faith History
In early November 2003 the show helped ABC tie for the lead in Friday night
viewership, attracting an audience of around twelve million.[citation needed] By
February 2004, ABC ordered four more episodes for the show's first season, for a
total of 26 episodes; as of then, Hope & Faith was being watched by around
nine million viewers each week.[citation needed] It continued at that level for
March, though by mid-April, when the show was renewed for a second season, it
was down to 6.8 million viewers and a 57th-place showing in the
ratings.[citation needed] The show's Nielsen Ratings during the 2005-2006 season
continued to weaken slightly. In its time slot Hope & Faith often placed
third, behind Three Wishes and Threshold; when Threshold was swapped with Close
to Home, the show continued to place third.[citation needed] The four episodes
broadcast during November sweeps averaged 6.52 million viewers, with weekly
rankings ranging from 63rd to 77th.[citation needed] Its rankings placed it at
or near the bottom for all 2005 primetime shows airing on the Big Three
broadcasting networks.
ABC announced on January 18, 2006 that it was benching Hope & Faith for
the February sweeps to make room for an expanded edition of Dancing with the
Stars. The show began to air its remaining episodes from March 21, 2006 on
Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET against American Idol. [1] In May 2006, ABC announced
that that the show would be cancelled when it unveiled its Fall 2006 lineup.
Hope and Faith Syndication
All 73 episodes were picked up by the U.S. television network WE: Women's
Entertainment, as the total number of produced episodes was short of what was
required for American television syndication.
